Huge Win to Open 2017

At the Bobby Orr Community Centre in Parry Sound, the sixth place Almaguin Spartans took to the ice for the 33rd time in the 2016 – 2017 season when they meet the second place Islanders on January 14th in a north division Greater Metro Hockey League match – up.

Almaguin’s Tom Stanislavski gave the Spartans a 1 – 0 lead with Daniel Magnussen and Bryan Austin adding the helpers at 4:56 on the first. With 33 seconds left in the period, Mikelis Pavelsons sends Almaguin into the first intermission up 2 – 0 with Austin and Magunssen registering the contributors on Pavelsons power play marker. With a power play goal, Parry Sound’s Valtteri Makiviinikka pulls the Islanders within one at 14:04 of the second with Ervin Halasz and Aleksi Salminen adding the assists.

1:34 into the third, Jan Vyoral evens the game 2 – 2 for the hosts with Dominick Tuma and Makiviinikka setting up Vyoral’s tying goal. Eight seconds past the halfway mark of the period, Benjamin Linna gives the Islanders a 3 – 2 lead with Patrick Porkka and Milan Prusek drawing the helpers. Magnussen fires the Spartans third of the game to tie the game 3 – 3 at 18:31 of the third with Shawn Lallier and Britton Whitehead setting up Magnussen’s goal. 35 seconds into overtime in Parry Sound. Islander Aleksi Salminen finds the back of the Spartan net to give the hosts a 4 – 3 win over Almaguin. Vyoral and Halasz added the helpers on Salminen game winner. Almaguin netminder Mark Moon made 36 saves in the Spartans overtime loss in Parry Sound.

Parry Sound will look to gather another two points on the road against South Muskoka on Friday, Jan 20th.
