POWASSAN Splits Series with JACKS

Sep 29, 2013

The Powassan Eagles played two games this past weekend in a home-and-home series against the Sturgeon Falls Lumberjacks. The weekend opened with a road trip to Sturgeon Falls followed by a home game at the Powassan Sportsplex on Saturday.

As mentioned, the Eagles opened the series with a road game in Sturgeon Falls on Friday evening. The Eagles were defeated 6-0 by the Jacks. Powassan stayed relatively even in shots, 38-31 Lumberjacks, but could not get one by their goaltender in the first road game. Rookie goaltender Marek Korduliak got the start between the pipes. The Eagles were without the services of second year player Josh Storie and defenseman Brody Knight.

Hungry for revenge, Sturgeon came to the Eagles barn the next night on Saturday. Powassan put forth a much stronger performance, winning the game 5-2 final. Vlastimil Hak got the start for Powassan and played solid. He made 45 saves and was named first star of the game. Up front, Pierre-Olivier Gauvreau led the way with a four point (2g, 2a) night. Patrick O’Grady scored a pair of goals while Togo Kaneko added a single.

Powassan is sitting middle of the pack with a record of 3-3-0 through the opening month of play. Togo Kaneko, Jan Smid and Pierre-Olivier Gauvreau are leading the squad in points with seven points each.

The Eagles will be playing two home games next weekend. First is a Saturday (Oct. 5) evening game against the Halton Ravens. Halton is an expansion club new for this season. Puck drop is 7:30PM.

This will be followed by a Sunday (Oct. 6) afternoon game against the Toronto Blue Ice Jets. The Jets are the renaming of the old Toronto Moose franchise that had a change of ownership this offseason. Puck drop on Sunday is 2:00PM.
